A Simpler Time

The 'Kissing Tone' KOMA 1520AM - Oklahoma City

It's Not What You Gather, but What You Scatter, that tells what kind of life you have lived

You know, time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems that just yesterday, I was young, just married, and embarking on my new life with my mate.  Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But here it is, the winter of my life, and it catches me by surprise. How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.

But here it is, my friends are retired and getting gray, they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than I, but I see the great change. Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant, but like me, their age is beginning to show. And, we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And, taking a nap is not a treat anymore, it's mandatory. Because if I don't by my own free will, I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so now, I enter this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done, but never did. I know that though the winter has come, I'm not sure how long it will last.

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done, things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

If you're not in your winter yet, let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life do it quickly. Don't put things off too long. Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not. You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life, therefore live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past.

Life is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.

LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY! HAVE A GREAT DAY!  It is health that is real wealth, not pieces of gold and silver.

LASTLY, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:  TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE, SO ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS.

Your children are becoming you, but your grandchildren are perfect.  Going out is good, coming home is better.  You forget names, but it's OK, because other people forgot they even knew you.

You realize you're never going to be really good at anything…especially golf. The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore.

You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep." You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch.

You tend to use more 4-letter words, "What?" "When?” Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.  You notice that everything they sell in stores is sleeveless.  What used to be freckles are now liver spots.  Everybody whispers.  You have three sizes of clothes in your closet, two of which you will never wear.  But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old Movies, and best of all, "Old" Friends.

This Just Might Remind You Of Someone You Know....

The Perks of being Over 50

Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size.

Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.
Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service.
People call at 9 PM and ask, "Did I wake you?"
People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
There is nothing left to learn the hard way.

Things you buy now won't wear out.
You can eat dinner at 4 P.M.
You can live without intimacy but not without glasses.
You enjoy hearing about other peoples operations.
You get into heated arguments about pension plans.
You have a party and the neighbors don't even realize it.
You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.
You sing along with elevator music.
Your eyes won't get much worse.
Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.

Lory's Drive-In

Everyone should remember going to Lory's for their Steak Fingers, Chipped Ham, great red chili cheese burgers. What a great hang out it was. Well, for a nostalgic look back to those days you need to check out the 'Remember' page. Thanks to Larry Davidson for providing me the opportunity to bring back the memories of Lory's Drive-In.

HOW TRUE IT IS

Another year has passed
And we're all a little older.
Last summer felt hotter
And winter seems much colder.

I rack my brain for happy thoughts,
To put down on my pad,
But lots of things, That come to mind
Just make me kind of sad.

There was a time not long ago
When life was quite a blast.
Now I fully understand
About 'Living in the Past'.

We used to go to friends homes,
Baseball games and lunches.
Now we go to therapy, to hospitals,
And after-funeral brunches.

We used to have hangovers,
From parties that were gay.
Now we suffer body aches
And sleep the night away.

We used to go out dining,
And couldn't get our fill.
Now we ask for doggie bags,
Come home and take a pill.

We used to travel often
To places near and far..
Now we get backaches
From riding in the car.

We used to go out shopping
For new clothing at the Mall
But, now we never bother...
All the sizes are too small.

That, my friend is how life is,
And now my tale is told.
So, enjoy each day and live it up...
Before you're too darn old!!

The Bengal's Turn 50

from John Rains

I'm from GHS class of '61. Thought you might like to know that this fall is the 50th year that the BENGALS have taken the field. Prior to 1958, Gallup's mascot was the TIGERS, along with two other teams in the 6 team conference.

To make ourselves distinctive from our rivels, it was proposed by someone in the student council that we change our team mascot to a larger jungle cat. There was an election by the student body in May 1958 and the result is history. A half century after the first Gallup Bengal team christened its new name by defeating district rival Saint Mary's of Albuquerque in football, we're still the only B cat in New Mexico. Incidently, the Tiger mascot name is the second most popular in the state with a dozen teams so named.
